The quintessential summer experience—splashing in pools, outdoor barbecues, and vibrant swimwear—often comes with an overlooked challenge for style-conscious women, particularly Black women with meticulously maintained hairstyles. Whether it's freshly relaxed straight hair, carefully styled curls, fashionable braids, or cropped cuts, the damaging effects of chlorine and water can undo hours of salon work in minutes. With expensive salon visits and long wait times for stylists, getting hair wet becomes more than an inconvenience—it's a legitimate concern. Enter the swim cap, a potential solution to this seasonal dilemma.

For many women, the moment their carefully styled hair touches pool water marks the beginning of a frustrating cycle of restyling and salon appointments. Consumer Reports undertook an important mission: to rigorously test swim caps currently on the market, searching for products that could genuinely keep hair dry underwater. The goal was to identify caps that would allow wearers to transition seamlessly from pool to daily activities without hair restyling. A swim cap that could completely block water would represent a breakthrough for swimmers worldwide.

To accomplish this, we assembled a team of six Consumer Reports staffers and contributors to test eight popular swim caps under realistic conditions. As the project lead, I (Camille Briggs) approached the testing with healthy skepticism about whether any product could truly keep hair dry while remaining comfortable and stylish. Our evaluation considered not just waterproofing but also comfort, durability, and design.

After extensive testing, only one of eight swim caps demonstrated truly exceptional waterproof performance. Other products showed varying degrees of effectiveness, with some performing adequately in specific areas while others failed completely. Our goal was to help consumers make informed choices and avoid wasting money on ineffective products.

• Waterproofing : Exceptional performance in all tests, with no noticeable leakage even during deep diving or prolonged immersion. Raven Rice reported her 4C hair remained virtually unaffected during vigorous swimming.

Among eight tested products, [Product A] emerged as our top recommendation for its outstanding waterproof performance, comfort, and durability. Other products showed varying degrees of effectiveness, and consumers should choose based on their specific hair needs and swimming habits.
